The explosive growth of checkout-free concessions stands at stadiums is continuing through the fall start of U.S. pro sports seasons, with the NBA’s Indiana Pacers announcing the addition of two checkout-free concessions stands using technology from Zippin at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
The two new stores, which join two stores previously deployed at Gainbridge Fieldhouse earlier on in the arena’s extensive remodeling project, now give the San Mateo, Calif.-based startup Zippin 41 stands in stadiums, putting the company well ahead of the competition. Amazon, which recently announced two new stores opening at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, has 20 stadium stores using its “Just Walk Out” technology, while another startup, the San Francisco-based AiFi, has three announced stadium stores, including two new ones at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
The Zippin “Fast Break” stores at Gainbridge Fieldhouse are retrofits of existing spaces, slightly larger in size than the new Zippin Lane drink-focused type stands that have been deployed at venues including Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. According to a press release from Zippin, the Pacers have seen as many as 3,500 fans use a single Zippin stand at a single event.
“The Fieldhouse of the Future renovations have made the most iconic venue in the NBA even better, and the state-of-the-art technology at our Fast Break concession locations, through our partnership with Zippin, are a vivid example of how these upgrades connect with a new generation of fans,” said Pacers Sports & Entertainment CEO Rick Fuson in a prepared statement.
