The Amazon “Just Walk Out” store concept, which is gaining popularity with stadium deployments, will be used at three concession stands at Texas A&M’s Kyle Field, with all stores scheduled to be open by the start of the 2022 football season, according to Amazon, caterers Levy and the school.
By our count, the three stores would bring Amazon’s total of stadium-deployed “Just Walk Out” stores to 14 when they open. The stores are the first of any known checkout-free operations that will be in a collegiate venue.
Zippin, a San Mateo, Calif.-based startup that also offers checkout-free technology, is in 30 stadium stores by our latest count, including five stands that will open at the Tennessee Titans’ Nissan Stadium starting at the end of July. All of Zippin’s stadium stores are in pro sports venues at the moment.
The Texas A&M stores will also support the Amazon One system, which allows customers to sign up ahead of time and use the palm of their hand for authorization. Other customers at Just Walk Out stores can simply scan a credit card at the entry gate. Like the Zippin stores, the Amazon just walk out stores allow fans to enter, select the items they want, and leave, with billing taking place online.
According to the Texas A&M website 12thman.com, “Two stores will be located in Section 125 and the third will be located in Section 129. The stores will offer fans products like snacks, chips, soda, bottled water, and alcoholic beverages. Fans purchasing alcohol will be required to show their ID to a store attendant for age verification.”
